International students looking for funding, scholarships or other financial assistance towards covering fees and living costs should start thinking about how to fund their studies as early as possible. Many funding agencies and scholarships have strict deadlines.

Please note that it is a condition of most funding agencies that students should hold at least a provisional offer of a place to study at a university before applying for a scholarship. Adequate funding for the full cost of the first year of studies must be in place in order for international students to successfully complete the visa application process.

Equity and Merit Scholarships for international master’s students

Equity and Merit Scholarships aim to assist talented but economically disadvantaged students from some of the world’s poorest countries.

Scholarships are currently available for up to 16 full-time campus-based postgraduate taught master’s students and up to 10 master’s by distance learning for academically excellent professionals from Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.

The scholarships are jointly funded by the University and its donors. The University covers the tuition fee in full and the generosity of donors pays for students’ living expenses, flights to the UK and visas.

Supporting outstanding students

The Equity and Merit Scheme is now in its tenth year. Since it began, a total of 181 scholarships have been awarded to exceptional individuals who have demonstrated both academic excellence and a commitment to the economic/social development of their home communities.

Current master’s scholarships

Scholarships are available for approximately 40 full-time PGT courses and three online courses: Public Health, MSc HRM and Development, and MSc Management and Information Systems. The programmes have been selected to address a particular need or skills gap in the target countries and in most cases are not offered locally.

Equity and Merit Scholarships are currently available for students from Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.

Scholarships for master's – Rwanda

We offer up to four scholarships for selected master's courses to applicants from Rwanda every year. The scholarships cover full tuition fees, return international air fares and living expenses.

Subjects

Scholarships are only available for specific courses in engineering, environment, medical and life sciences, and law. Scholarships are not available for business and finance courses.

Eligibility

Our master's scholarships are aimed at talented applicants, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds. To apply for a scholarship, you must:

have at least two years' relevant post-graduation work experience (this does not include unpaid internships or voluntary work);

hold a first or upper second class (or the equivalent) undergraduate degree;

be a resident citizen of Rwanda and have not previously studied outside Africa;

be committed to returning home and able to demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact on the future of Rwanda;

have a clear idea how studying in Manchester will benefit both your career and the wider community.

English language requirements

An IELTS certificate is not required at the time of application. If you are shortlisted for the scholarship, you will be asked to take the IELTS test. English language requirements vary by course, but in most cases you will need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with no sub-test less than 5.5) or TOEFL 570 (90 IBT) to go through to the final selection round.

We do not accept a Certificate of English Proficiency from a Rwandan university instead of the IELTS test. You can take the IELTS AND TOEFL tests in Kigali. Contact the British Council or TOEFL test centre for details.

Manchester Alumni Scholarship Scheme

If you are a current undergraduate at The University of Manchester and plan to start a master's course in the Faculty of Humanities from September 2017, you may be eligible for our Manchester Alumni Scholarship Scheme. Alumni who graduated within the past three years may also be eligible.

Eligibility criteria

The scholarship is available to University of Manchester graduates who have received a first-class honours degree enrolling on a Faculty of Humanities master’s course starting in September 2017.

Students applying will need to apply within three years of receiving their degree, meaning that alumni who graduated in June 2014 or later could also be eligible. The scholarship is available for international, EU and home students who will study full-time, part-time or by distance learning.

You may be eligible to apply for other bursaries across the University; please contact the School in which your course will be based for further information. Please note that you will not normally receive the Manchester Alumni Scholarship should you be successful in applying for another University scholarship.
